If Shelby had to pretend to take another bite of spaghetti without actually getting to eat, she was going to stick her tongue out and beg like a dog. She’d twirled her fork around a spoon, lifted the steaming pasta to her mouth, and opened wide more times than she could count. She’d never craved spaghetti more.

Almost like a real date, twenty-two-year-old Dax Shelton, an aspiring actor from Knoxville, told her about his jump from waiter to model and the variety of jobs he’d been sent on in the past two years with the agency. Like a real date, except for the photographer circling the table and the lights shining in their faces. The fact that Shelby had jumped from promotion work to advertising in less than two months made Shelby’s stomach ache from more than just food deprivation. If Dax’s path was typical, this opportunity was anything but. Maryanne wasn’t kidding. This could be a boon to her career—as long as she didn’t screw it up.

“Okay, kids. I think we got what we need.” The photographer stepped back and his assistant dimmed the lights. “Roni, you want to take a look?”

“You know I do.” Roni stepped next to his computer and clicked through the pictures. “These look good,” she said without taking her eyes off the screen. “We’ve got the bar set up for some cocktail shots and then we need to wrap this up in time to open for dinner.”

Shelby joined Dax and the other models being arranged in the bar area. Plopped on the leather stool with a spritz drink for a prop, she smiled and laughed her way through picture after picture. Adjustments were made to the lighting, placements were changed, and the shoot came to an end a few minutes later. “That’s a wrap,” the photographer said. “Good work, everybody.”

Shelby brought her drink to the kitchen and set it beside the industrial sink. She approached Roni and the photographer where they stood huddled over the computer. “Can I help you clean up or anything?”

Roni squeezed her arm. “Such a sweet girl. No, your work is done.”

“Thanks for the opportunity to work with you.”

“You don’t need to thank me.”

Shelby looked at the photographer. He was younger than Rudy but had the same lanky build and artistic dress. “It was great working with you.”

He nodded. “Likewise.”

She turned to make her way to the staging area when she spotted Nick standing outside the kitchen. Her stomach twisted with nerves. She poked her head into the dining room and lifted a finger. “I’ll be just a second.”

“Take your time,” he said. “I’m in no rush.”

She nodded and went to change her clothes. How long had he been there? What did he think of her “work”? Knowing Nick, she was about to find out.

Nick stood in the kitchen when she emerged from the office, talking to Roni with a to-go box in his hand.

“Ah,” Roni said as Shelby approached. “You feed this girl, Nicholas. Her stomach has been growling all day.
